The University Clinic for Companion Animals is the academic veterinary hospital of Utrecht University (Faculty of Veterinary Medicine). As a university institution, the clinic has specialist knowledge and equipment that goes beyond what a regular practice can offer. For complex or rare conditions, this is often the most appropriate place to go.
Department of Birds and Exotic Animals
Ferrets are treated by the Department of Birds and Exotic Animals. This department has specialist experience with exotic animals and small mammals, and works closely with the other departments of the clinic (internal medicine, surgery, pathology) when additional diagnostics are required.
When to go to the university clinic?
The university clinic is particularly suitable for:
- Cases in which the regular veterinarian wants a second opinion or specialist advice
- Complex diagnostics — MRI, CT scan, endoscopy and extensive laboratory analysis are available on site
- Rare or difficult-to-treat conditions where regular options have been exhausted
- Surgical procedures that require specialist skills
When making an appointment, mention that it concerns a ferret, so that you are directed to the correct department.
